Women’s lacrosse coming to MVNU athletics

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — In keeping with its commitment to athletic expansion, Mount Vernon Nazarene University has announced the addition of women’s lacrosse for the 2021-22 season as part of the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association.

“We are excited about the addition of women’s lacrosse to the MVNU Athletic Department,” said Director of Athletics Chip Wilson. “We have looked at the landscape of girl’s lacrosse at the high school level, and the popularity is growing quickly. There has been support from the MVNU campus and local community with the addition of men’s lacrosse this year. It is a natural progression to look forward and use a similar model with women’s lacrosse. Expanding with women’s lacrosse will allow us to reach out and connect with a new group of female student-athletes that will be looking for this opportunity at the college level.”

Ryan Farr, head coach for men’s lacrosse, has been named interim head coach for the women’s program. This strategy has already been effective to promote the program as Farr meets with high school student-athletes in the recruitment process.

“There is certainly interest from high school athletes when it comes to pursuing the sport at the next level,” said Farr. “We had a very successful recruiting year for the men’s team in 2019, which began to incite interest from high school girl’s lacrosse players who inquired about the possibility of a woman’s team at MVNU. This, coupled with the increased number of lacrosse participants at the high school level, makes women’s lacrosse a logical and exciting new sport at MVNU.”

Athletes interested in women’s lacrosse, or any of the 20 varsity, seven reserve or one additional club sport, are invited to attend Athletic Recruitment Day on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m., in Ariel Arena.

Women’s lacrosse is one of the athletic programs that will experience competition at the new Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium. Phase 1 of the construction is nearly complete as the turf field has been installed with lighting and scoreboard to follow. For more information on the stadium, visit www.mvnu.edu/future.
