MVNU presents spring musical, ‘Freaky Friday: The Musical’
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Music Department and MVNU Theater will present the Disney’s “Freaky Friday: The Musical,” April 4-6, at 7:30 p.m., in Thorne Performance Hall.
When an uber-organized mother and her spontaneous teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right. Masquerading as each other, they work together to solve the mystery of how to break the spell. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another in a way they never could have imaged. In the end, both learn the true power of love and strength of the bond between a mother and daughter in this heartfelt and hilarious adaptation.
Based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, “Freaky Friday: The Musical” features a book by Bridget Carpenter, the co-executive producer and writer on the beloved TV hits, “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood.” Music and lyrics are by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of “Next to Normal.”
The cast has an exhausting rehearsal schedule, but their efforts will pay off for the audience.
“An average week consists of three rehearsals, each of them around three hours. It’s definitely a considerable time commitment, but absolutely worth it in every way,” said Chloe Davis, a sophomore from Mount Sterling, majoring in Public Relations and Music.
“This cast has bonded so quickly, and supports each other like no other cast I have been a part of,” said Rachel Rinehart, of Mount Vernon, a junior majoring in Theatre and Journalism & Media Production. “The best part of this show is that it is so fun. We are truly having a blast playing all of these characters, and singing these crazy songs. I have a feeling the audience will see just how much fun we are having with this musical — it’s contagious.”
Director Serra Barrett is proud of the way the cast has come together.
“I think what’s great about this cast is their chemistry on stage. They have built really unbelievable relationships and it shines,” Barrett said.
The cast includes Rachel Rinehart as Ellie Blake; Chloe Davis as Katherine Blake; Rowan Vail as Fletcher; Taylor Dalrymple as Mike; Daniel Carpenter as Karl; Corey Spellman as Monica; Owen Boyd as Adam; Lizzy Terwilliger as Savannah; Allison Neueschwander as Kitty; Laura Beth Fraley as Torrey; Min Leinbach as Danielle; Abigail Wallis as Louis; Carly Sumption as Dr. Ehrin; Hope Schwind as Mrs. Blumen; Ben King as Mr. Luckenbill; Trinity Leady as Señora O’Brien; Sarah Fanning as Ms. Meyers; Brianna Stauffer as Officer Kowalski; Amanda Wertz as Mrs. Time; and Drew Egler as Minister.
