MVNU instrumental ensembles to perform March 28

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (March 22, 2023) — The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present a spring instrumental ensembles concert on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m., in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The concert will feature the Jazz Band, Dixieland Septet, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

The MVNU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Dixieland Septet will be performing a variety of styles of music. The band will open the concert with a Latin adaption of “My Ship,” arranged by Dave Rivello. Next a wonderful ballad by Rich DeRosa entitled “A Sky Full of Dreams,” will feature Chris Hawthorne on piano, Judith Dettmar on flute, with Matthew Vines and Jordan Gregory on trumpet. The Dixieland Septet will perform the Paul Severson arrangement of the New Orleans classic “St. James Infirmary.” The Jazz Band will end with a beautiful arrangement of Sting’s “Fields of Gold” featuring Greg Thompson on trombone. Mr. Chuck Dettmar directs the MVNU Jazz Band.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will embark on an adventure themed program beginning with Rossano Galante’s “Mount Everest.” The journey continues with an ocean adventure in “The Sea Treaders” by Francis McBeth. The program also features excerpts from Johan De Meij’s Symphony No. 1 “The Lord of the Rings” and ends in a galaxy far away with music from “Star Wars.” Dr. John Packard directs the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
