MVNU’s GPS social work program ranked best in Ohio
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Graduate and Professional Studies social work program was recently ranked in the top 15% of the country and No. 1 in the state of Ohio by College Factual.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by College Factual as an outstanding program,” said Jean Ollis, GPS Social Work Program Coordinator. “MVNU GPS Social Work has been serving our region for over 10 years, and has earned the reputation of being the premiere option for the non-traditional student. We have a talented team of faculty and staff who exhibit excellence in teaching and professional mentoring, both in and out of the classroom.”
This ranking was based on factors including the student loan default rate, average graduate salaries, the availability of online and night/weekend classes, and other flexible learning options non-traditional students value.
“As a non-traditional student who works full-time, MVNU’s GPS program made obtaining my degree possible by affording me the opportunity to take one class at a time, in person, one night a week. If not for that option, I don’t know that I would have been able to finish my BSW,” said Aj Alfano, 2017 MVNU GPS social work graduate.
Faculty members provide relevant curriculum and build connections with students based on real world experiences as practicing social work professionals. The relationships that develop out of the program are vital to the success of the non-traditional student.
Social workers are in high demand, as the job outlook projected by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the field at 16%, an impressive figure considering the job outlooks for all fields is a mere 7%.
The popular major at MVNU resonates with adult degree seekers due to several unique program attributes including:
•As students work through the social work program, they will accrue the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue their social work licensure, as well as graduate education.
•Supportive faculty members are all invested in the future of students, and teach through their personal experiences in the field.
•The cohort-based learning model allows students to intentionally form connections with classmates and teachers, which will benefit career search post-graduation.
•All courses in the program are guided by a Christian worldview.
•A career in social work can be broad, and encompasses a vast array of fields of practice including: chemical dependency, health care, child welfare, public policy, criminal justice, as well as a variety of community organizations and international agencies.
