More high school students taking advantage of MVNU’s dual enrollment

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (October 18, 2022) — High school students are taking advantage of the College Credit Plus (CCP) program at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in increasing numbers.

MVNU’s enrollment numbers show significant gains in CCP participation resulting in a 25 percent increase from 2019 to 2022. Currently, MVNU welcomes 213 CCP students from 40 schools as well as homeschooled students.

“Many of MVNU’s CCP students are getting a jump start on their educational goals while they are still in high school. Not only are they getting high school graduation credits, they are simultaneously earning college credits,” said Justin Nowicki, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “Some of our students are even able to move into a college freshman-level track their senior year of high school.”

College Credit Plus was started by the Ohio Department of Education in 2015 to provide talented students in grades 7 to 12 access to college courses at no cost to the family. MVNU offers partner secondary schools the opportunity to participate in a textbook agreement where MVNU handles textbook fulfillment. The state of Ohio pays tuition costs.

Private high school students and home-schooled students are also eligible and funded at a reduced level.

Qualified students may take courses on the Mount Vernon campus, online, or at one of the university’s partner high schools.

“MVNU’s CCP program offers unique flexibility and support to our students. We offer a wide variety of high-quality classes that allow students to meet their high school requirements through coursework many high schools simply do not have the resources to offer,” said Crystal Goehring, Director of Dual Enrollment and Admissions Operations. “In addition, our entire community offers support to these students including our Center for Student Success, caring professors, and dedicated Dual Enrollment staff.”

The dual enrollment strategy allows for credit to be awarded by both the secondary school and the university. Once, completed, class grades become part of each student’s official transcript. MVNU courses fulfill many general higher education requirements and easily transfer in for a MVNU degree.

With a variety of majors and minors available, MVNU integrates its intentionally Christian lens in all course offerings. Top majors for traditional students include nursing, elementary education/intervention, biology, business administration, Christian ministry, and exercise science.
