Mille Guldbeck’s solo exhibition opens at Schnormeier Gallery
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (Jan. 6, 2023) — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Schnormeier Gallery is pleased to present Linguistic Relativity, a solo exhibition by Mille Guldbeck. This exhibit will open on Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. and will be on display through Feb. 24. A gallery talk will be given at the Schnormeier Gallery on Jan. 19, at 5:30 p.m., with a reception following at 8 p.m.
Guldbeck’s artwork is concerned with the intersections of craft and perception. She uses painting and drawing to talk about varying levels of reality through the representation of various physical planes. Her paintings, which employ illusionistic space in several genres, refer to how convincing a certain position may be at one point but somewhat unconvincing from a different viewpoint. The artworks in this exhibition are concerned with exploring the idea of Linguistic Relativity — the inability to perceive something because the word for it does not exist. Questioning the neutrality of traditional materials through material investigations, Guldbeck critically examines her process, specifically the act of sewing and dyeing fabric. These processes are historically linked to domestic labor, feminism, and the definitions that we use of craft, but also to the history of painting practice.
Guldbeck is currently a Full Professor and Area Head of Painting and Drawing at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She lives and works in Ohio and Denmark.
