Downtown parking lot benefits MVNU, community

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University has a new parking lot in downtown Mount Vernon thanks to the Mount Vernon Development Company. The recently opened lot is located on the corner of South Gay and East Vine streets at the site of the former Mullendore building.

“The new parking lot will ease the stress of students, faculty and staff as they access Buchwald Center, Hunter Hall and the Nease Center,” said MVNU President Dr. Henry W. Spaulding II. “The lot has excellent lighting and provides a new level of convenience for MVNU.”

A gift from MVDC, the lot provides 17 designated parking spots for the MVNU community near the downtown campus. The spaces will provide parking for MVNU until 5 p.m., weekdays. The public will have the opportunity to utilize the lot Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.; and weekends, 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

“With the ABET accreditation of MVNU’s engineering program, we feel it is important to plan for growth of that important field of study,” said Jen Odenweller, executive director of The Ariel Foundation, which partnered with MVDC to bring this downtown development project to fruition. “Taking public-private partnership approaches to parking in the core downtown area means we can maximize resources to support weekday needs with different needs of the community for evening and weekend access.”

Five additional lots with matching beautification and evening lighting features along the Gay Street corridor will be completed by the end of the year. Signage for the lots is expected in early 2020.

MVNU’s parking lot at South Main Plaza, north of Buchwald Center, also allows for public parking from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., weekdays; and 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University is proud to continue its partnerships with The Ariel Foundation and Mount Vernon Development Company.

“It is difficult to imagine downtown without this great generosity,” Spaulding said. “These organizations have joined with us to remake the downtown space for the future. We hope to show our appreciation by being good neighbors and stewards of the resources entrusted to us.”
