Community Invited to MVNU Music Department Spring Concerts

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Music Department will present three concerts to end the school year. All concerts are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, April 26, the MVNU Big Band and Jazz Combo will play an evening of jazz, pop, and rock standards at 7:30 p.m. in the Prince Student Union on the MVNU campus, 800 Martinsburg Road, under the direction of Jim Puckett. The Big Band will perform selections by Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mandel, Neal Hefti, Gordon Goodwin and Chuck Mangione. Two student Jazz Combos will also perform.

On Saturday, April 28, two separate concerts will showcase seven MVNU ensembles. The instrumental ensembles will be featured in the first concert at 3 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by Jim Puckett, will perform standard band literature including William Schuman’s “Chester” which is based on a colonial era hymn tune by William Billings. They will present a suite of songs from the MGM classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” which celebrates its 90th anniversary this coming year. The ensemble will also showcase its second world premiere of the semester. “Concerto for Percussion Quartet,” by adjunct professor and local composer Jim Puckett, features four MVNU percussion students playing 32 different percussion instruments in three movements. The Brass Ensemble directed by Doug Neel, Flute Choir directed by Jennifer Packard, and Woodwind Ensemble directed by Adrienne Lape will also perform a variety of literature.

The choral ensembles will be featured in the second concert at 7:30 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. Collegians Chorale, the concert choir directed by Dr. Bob Tocheff, will share songs from their spring church tour including “God” by Eddie James, “God Is Able” by Smokie Norful, and “Let Everything that Hath Breath” by Jeffrey Ames. Also included will be Gilbert Martin’s arrangement of “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” accompanied by MVNU student Taylor Hendershott on the Schantz pipe organ, Mozart’s “Ave Verum,” and the “Alleluia” from Bach’s “Motet VI” accompanied by string quartet. They will also present the unique and humorous “Animal Crackers” by Eric Whitacre. Treble Singers Women’s Choir, directed by Sabina Anderson, will perform a variety of songs including works by Stephen Hatfield and MVNU student composer Coralie Christopher. Their program will also feature Dr. Virginia Cameron on the Great Highland bagpipe. Goliards Chamber Choir, directed by Carrie Vail, will also present a variety of music to showcase this small a cappella choir.
