MVNU Presents ‘Leader of the Pack: The Ellie Greenwich Musical’

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Music Department, in conjunction with MVNU Theatre, will present “Leader of the Pack: The Ellie Greenwich Musical,” based on an original concept by Melanie Mintz.

Performances will be on Thursday, April 12; Friday, April 13; and Saturday, April 14. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Thorne Performance Hall inside the R.R. Hodges Chapel on the campus of MVNU, 800 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon.

This Tony-award winning musical is based upon the life and music of singer/songwriter Ellie Greenwich, who wrote many of the doo-wop hits of the 1960s, including “Chapel of Love,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Be My Baby,” “Do Wah Diddy Diddy,” “And Then He Kissed Me,” and, of course, the title song, “Leader of the Pack.” The music and lyrics featured in the musical were written by Ellie Greenwich and friends, includes liner notes by Anne Beatts, and additional material by Jack Heifner.

MVNU alumnus Nicholas DeWalt and adjunct professor Carrie Vail serve as co-directors of the production.

“A lot of people know the music from this show, so it will give them an insight into the people behind the songs. This show is definitely family-friendly and I think it would be appealing to all ages,” said Vail.

Vail is excited by the hard work the actors and production team have put into the rehearsal process.

DeWalt, who graduated in fall 2016, said he “couldn’t wait to be back.” DeWalt previously directed MVNU Theatre’s production of “Bang Bang You’re Dead,” and he said, “As soon as I even got wind of the school doing a musical, I instantly wanted to be a part of it.”

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for ages 17 and under or those with military ID. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at theatre.mvnu.edu, by phone at 740-397-9000 ext. 1620, or at the box office beginning one hour prior to showtime. All seating is reserved, and doors open approximately 30 minutes prior to showtime.

“Leader of the Pack: The Ellie Greenwich Musical” is the final production of MVNU Theatre’s 2017-18 season. Follow MVNU Theatre on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with the latest program news and events.
