MVNU Constitution Day Talk to feature Dr. Vika Rai

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University will host Dr. Vika Rai in honor of Constitution Day on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., in the Jetter School of Professional Studies, Room 133. Her talk will focus on “Local Climate Politics: Predictors of Adaptation Planning in Cities Across the United States.”

Dr. Rai is an assistant professor at the Political Science department at the University of Toledo. She received her doctoral degree in political science from the University of Kansas where she was an NSF-IGERT trainee and a research fellow at the Institute of Policy & Social Research (IPSR).

Before moving to the United States, Dr. Rai worked as a researcher at a leading think-tank — the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in India. At TERI, she has worked on various projects related to sustainable development and rural community empowerment. She has a unique masters’ degree in environmental studies from Erasmus Mundus, the Eu’s program that supports education, training, youth and sport in Europe through a consortium of four universities — University of Manchester, UK; Central European University, Hungary; Lund University, Sweden; and Agean University, Greece. Dr. Rai’s research interests are in environmental policy with special focus on climate adaptation and water management in Lake Erie.

The talk will explore local politics that shape climate adaptation efforts across small, medium and large cities. Dr. Rai examines variation in climate risk, vulnerabilities, and state and local factors to understand commitment to engage in adaptation planning.
