Henry W. Spaulding II, Ph.D.
Henry W. Spaulding II, Ph.D., has served as the seventh President of Mount Vernon Nazarene University since November 2, 2012. Before his election, Dr. Spaulding briefly served as Interim President. He first came to MVNU to serve as Provost and Chief Academic Officer in 2009.
Dr. Spaulding was the Professor of Philosophical Theology and Christian Ethics at Nazarene Theological Seminary (2007-2009) in Kansas City before coming to MVNU. He also served as the Director of the Master of Divinity Program while at NTS. Dr. Spaulding was the Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee (1995-2007) where he also served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Religion. He served as the Senior Pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Woodbridge, Virginia from 1992-1995. Dr. Spaulding was a Professor of Religion at Eastern Nazarene College from 1982-1992 and served as Chair of the Division of Religion and Philosophy/Coordinator of Graduate Religion. His first professional assignment was as the Senior Pastor at First Church of the Nazarene in Thomasville, Georgia. from 1979-1982.
He served the General Church of the Nazarene from 1985-1989 as the Chairperson of the Commission on the Doctrine of the Church for the 1989 General Assembly of the International Church of the Nazarene. This resulted in the addition of Article XI - The Church into the Manual of the Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Spaulding recently published We Believe: Engaging the Doctrinal Heritage of the Church of the Nazarene. Currently he is working on a book titled What Does Aldersgate Have to do with Athens?: The Case for a Holiness University in the Twenty-First Century.
Additionally, his research interests have been in exploring the impact of the intersection of postmodern philosophy on Wesleyan-Holiness theology. He has published four articles in the Wesleyan Theological Journal addressing this intersection.
Dr. Spaulding received his undergraduate degree in history and religion from Trevecca Nazarene University. He went on to Nazarene Theological Seminary to earn a Master of Divinity degree with an emphasis in systematic theology. His doctoral work was done at Florida State University in religion and the humanities.
Dr. Spaulding has been married to Sharon for forty years and they have three adult children: Shelly, Megan, and Henry III. Shelly is married to Matthew and they have two children, Hunter and Isabella. Megan is married to Kyle. Henry III is a Ph.D. student at Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
