Online Master of Science in Nursing Degree

An administrative, leadership, or teaching role represents the next step for many practicing nursing professionals, and paving the way there, Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) helps students hone their instructional and content development skills. The program includes a core of advanced nursing courses and a Nurse Educator concentration that prepares students to take the National League for Nursing’s Certified Nurse Educator Exam.

Geared toward registered nurses who previously completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), this 100% online program prepares students to teach in academic and clinical settings and have a voice in staff and policy development. In the process, the flexible format ensures that nurses who have already climbed the ranks within the healthcare field won’t have to take time off to advance their career.

Starting with the core, students examine current theories and practices related to nursing methodology and leadership, focusing on where these areas intersect with research and clinical practices. Physiological principles also receive a significant amount of attention, particularly pathologic syndromes, pharmacologic actions, and medications related to common disorders.

Outside of advanced clinical topics, the core courses explore the role of nursing within healthcare management, education, and design. The online MSN curriculum explores subjects involving health promotion, health education, disease prevention, and resource utilization among diverse groups and populations; provides an overview of the US healthcare system’s policies, financing, and professional issues; and covers the technologies used to improve the quality and delivery of patient care. Throughout, students learn more about current issues affecting the nursing profession and healthcare system.

For the concentration, courses focus specifically on teaching nursing-related subjects and developing instructional tools:

  • Curriculum Development in Nursing Education: Students learn to develop nursing curriculum content, factoring in current education trends and regulatory, and accreditation, professional standards.

  • Assessment and Evaluation in Nursing Education: Evaluations signify education benchmarks and progress, and in learning how to develop them, MSN students explore strategies for determining successful learning outcomes, including test construction and non-testing methods.

  • Nursing Education Practicum: The course instructs MSN students on incorporating clinical practice within a curriculum, factoring in professional standards, cultural diversity, and learning styles. The practicum is research based and involves selecting a topic a student identifies during a needs assessment.

Upon completing the core and Nurse Educator concentration courses, students who have maintained an active RN license are eligible to sit for the NLN’s Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) exam.
