Master of Arts in EducationGPS

Online Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed) Degrees

Mount Vernon Nazarene University strives to have all of our graduate education students earn their Ohio teacher license, and with this goal at the forefront, all online Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) programs require students to pursue one of three licensing options.

All programs are structured around a research-based core of education courses that ambitious adult students can complete entirely online and finish with a mix of online courses, classroom experiences, and fieldwork that aid students in earning their specific educational license. For additional marketability, online M.A.Ed students may supplement their course load with an educational endorsement.

Online M.A.Ed Curriculum

The online M.A.Ed curriculum blends theoretical instruction with hands-on research and application practices that students carry out in their classroom and field assignments or in a college laboratory setting.

As a result of these factors, Affordable Colleges Online named MVNU’s M.A.Ed program the Best Online Master’s in Education in 2018.

  • Designed for Adult Learners — Along with flexible online coursework, students can transfer up to six (6) credit hours from accredited graduate institutions toward the completion of their degree.
  • Prepare for a Teaching Career — MVNU’s Teacher Education Program stands upon a rigorous, research-heavy approach that extends across undergraduate and graduate coursework. Collaborative partnerships with local schools and school districts open up opportunities for students to learn about and work with diverse populations and apply MVNU’s faith-rooted philosophy of compassion, competence, and commitment.
  • Classroom Experience — All programs require a certain number of field and classroom hours, which are scheduled during the day based on the school’s and student’s availability and often involve interfacing with different student populations, based on age, ability, and diversity. In the process, they gain the experience needed to teach in a preschool through grade 12 setting and to apply for their license upon graduation.

Because all online M.A.Ed programs are geared toward helping students earn their Resident Educator License, students must complete all coursework within six (6) years of their first day in class and have up to three (3) years to earn their license after graduation.

Online MA in Education Programs

Students choosing to pursue an M.A.Ed at MVNU can choose from three programs and add two endorsements.

Intervention Specialist–Initial License (ISM)

Those interested in working with students with mild-to-moderate disabilities may find this program’s structure beneficial. Courses prepare students to earn a license and work as an Intervention Specialist for Mild/Moderate (ISM) Disabilities and place emphasis on the needs of this unique student population, including developing, implementing, and evaluating Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Intervention Specialist–Full License (ISP)

Also preparing students to work as an Intervention Specialist for Mild/Moderate Disabilities, the ISP program is ideal for teachers who have already earned an Early Childhood Education, Middle Childhood Education, Adolescent Young Adult, or Multi-Age license or for teachers already working with students with disabilities who seek to expand their credentials.

Professional Educator’s License (PEL)

Students work toward earning a four-year Resident Educator License through fully online courses and two 75 clock-hour field experiences. Students electing this program further need to complete a concentration and have the option to add an endorsement.

Endorsements

Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement (ECE): Students wanting to specialize in a particular grade level or classroom subject may benefit from adding an endorsement to their M.A.Ed. degree. The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement (ECE) is geared toward those who have already earned a PreK-3 Ohio teaching license and seek to teach grades 4-5.

Careers for Licensed Educators

According to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for teachers across Kindergarten and Elementary, High School, and Special Education fields is predicted to remain steady through 2028.

Interested in starting your education career in Ohio?

  • Online M.A.Ed students must first pass two Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) exams before applying for their Resident Educator License, the state’s initial teacher license.
  • The Resident Educator License has a four-year duration, and teachers are encouraged to seek out mentorship and professional development opportunities through the state’s Resident Educator Program over this period.
  • For further licensure, teachers need to pass the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA), which opens up the opportunity to apply for the Professional Educator License (PEL), which itself lasts for five years.

Teachers who have already earned a master’s and are looking to expand their credentials are eligible to apply for a Senior Professional Educator License after nine years on the job. Later on, instructors may seek to earn a Lead Professional Educator License, which requires a Teacher Leader Endorsement or National Board Certification.
