Social Studies for Upper Elementary Grades

Offering a comprehensive introduction, this course covers National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards and Ohio academic content, instructional methods, pedagogy, assessment procedures, and key materials for teaching social studies to grade 4 and 5 students. In the process, you’ll learn about key state historical, cultural, geographic, economic, and political events.

Mathematics for Upper Elementary Grades

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of both National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and Ohio academic content standards, pedagogy, assessment procedures, and teaching materials for students in grades 4 and 5. Topics range from number sense and mathematical processes through algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

Early Childhood Endorsement Practicum

All candidates complete a 50-hour supervised classroom experience with grade 4 or 5 students.

Adolescent Literature

Helping teachers introduce genres, authors, and illustrators of children’s and young adult literature, this course goes over evaluation, analysis, and reader-response theories. In viewing reading skills as essential to all areas of academic study, this course further touches on developing lessons and activities related to science, social studies, and mathematics.

For flexibility and affordability, MVNU offers tuition on a course-by-course, per-credit basis. Keep in mind that the total tuition does not include the cost of textbooks and other classroom supplies.
