Online General Studies, Associate of Arts
Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s 100% online General Studies courses are designed for adult learners who want to complete their college degree but do not have a sufficient number of credits to enroll in an undergraduate degree-completion program or have enough total credits to graduate.
By combining our online General Studies courses with the subjects in your chosen undergraduate program, it is possible to obtain your degree in a very timely and convenient way. By working one-on-one with an academic advisor, you'll be able to create a graduation plan that's specifically designed to meet your individual academic needs.

GPS’s General Education Requirements
MVNU’s School of Graduate & Professional Studies (GPS) blends a flexible, often online format with a quality, liberal arts–based education that challenges students to strive toward their personal and professional best. The GPS curriculum, beginning with the online General Studies courses, encourages all candidates to improve their critical-thinking, communication, and research skills and weaves our ethical standards and Christian worldview in between.
GPS creates a stimulating and supportive learning environment, whether on campus or online, and bases course subject matters on relevant, professional experience that prepares you for today’s marketplace. Our online General Studies courses establish a foundation for whichever degree program you pursue, be it in education, social work, business, or ministry, and introduce essential skills and concepts that set you up for success at MVNU.
- Arts and Humanities (15 Credit Hours): All students must complete three (3) credit hours of English composition with a research and writing component and three (3) credit hours in Bible studies and theology.
- Natural and Social Sciences and Mathematics (15 Credits): Students must complete at least three (3) credits of mathematics, three (3) credits in social science, and three (3) credits in a natural science course with a laboratory component.
- Liberal Arts Electives (9 Credits for Bachelor’s Degrees/6 Credits for Associate Degrees): Students have the freedom to explore a range of liberal arts courses, selecting subjects that pique their interest.
Along with these 36–39 credits, GPS general education requirements include 39 credits of upper-division coursework. Because many of the students matriculating through GPS have completed some college courses or have experiences that translate to prior learning credit (PLC), you may be able to eliminate some, if not all, of your general education requirements before beginning your degree program at MVNU. Understand that all GPS students must fulfill MVNU’s 30-credit residency requirement to graduate.
Our online General Studies courses are offered year-round on a rotating basis. Review the current course descriptions here.
