Start Early — Start Strong!

The MVNU Nease Institute is a summer bridge/first-year experience program that offers eligible incoming first-year students preparation for the transition to college and the chance to establish themselves as scholars equipped for thriving in their college experience. The Nease Institute is named in honor of Dr. Stephen Nease, who was the first president of Mount Vernon Nazarene College when it was founded in 1968.
Why attend the Nease Institute?
- Connect Early: You’ll begin transitioning to college life before the official start of school and will develop important skills for college success.
- Achieve Now: You’ll get an introduction to the college experience and strengthen your academic skills through completing a college-level one-credit course.
- Thrive Together: You’ll meet faculty and staff who want to invest in you, learn the student-centered services of MVNU, build a supportive group of friends and mentors, and have a lot of fun in the process.
- You’ll continue to have connections and community throughout the entire university journey.
The Nease Institute begins with an eight-day residential program on the campus of MVNU and extends through your MVNU journey. Our curriculum is designed to improve oral communication, writing, critical thinking, organizational techniques, and interpersonal skills.
What qualifications should I have to attend Nease this coming summer?
Consider applying if you meet any of the following:
- Your high school GPA is a 3.3 or lower,
- Your ACT composite score is a 21 or less,
- Or you’re a first-generation college student
High school coursework will also be reviewed if you are close to the above qualifications and still want to be considered. The qualifications are a helpful guideline since there are limited spots for the Nease Institute; however, we thoroughly consider all student applications and accept as many students as we can in the program.

- motivated, engaged, and resilient,
- have strong connections to your university, faculty, staff, and fellow students,
- and are open to seeking out academic opportunities,
you’ll successfully graduate! That’s what we want for every student who begins their course of study at MVNU. The Nease Institute is designed to facilitate these opportunities for you.
