Instrumental Ensembles Concert

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, and Jazz Band will present a concert on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free event.

The Jazz Band will be performing several selections from the Count Basie Orchestra library by Neil Hefti, as well as a few pop classics reimagined for jazz ensemble. The Jazz Band is led by new director, Dr. Isaac Winland. The Flute choir will present “Railroaded” by Nicole Chamberlain. This unique composition employs various extended techniques to portray the theme of the piece. The Flute Choir is directed by Jennifer Packard.

To complete the concert, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present various concert works including Samuel Hazo’s “Chorus Angelorum” and a piece celebrating the Apollo 11 moon landing 50 years ago. John Mackey’s “Foundry” will also be performed. This piece features a plethora of “found” percussion and according to the composer celebrates that percussionists have the ability to make just about anything into an “instrument.”

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is directed by Dr. John Packard.
