Community Service and Ministry Opportunity Groups 2014-2015


An evening program that works with children and adults of the Spanish speaking community to better understand English. You do not have to speak Spanish to participate in this group!

Columbia Kids

An after school program we are connected with through Columbia Elementary School. MVNU students tutor Columbia students in homework and build relationships through fun activities.

When: Wednesdays- meet at chapel @ 3:15pm; return around 5pm
Where: Columbia Elementary School in Mount Vernon

Cut & Paste

Works to encourage children to be creative through arts and crafts, and connects the beauty of creativity to Godís creations.

When: Thursdays 4:30-6pm
Where: First Presbyterian Church (downtown Mount Vernon)

Escape Zone

Ministers to the youth of Knox County through homework help and a safe place to hang out on Friday nights.

Leader: Michaela Kinnison, Kyler Curtis
When: Friday nights meet at chapel @ 6:30pm; return around 11pm
Where: Escape Zone in downtown Mount Vernon; across from Domino's pizza

Learning Zone (out of commission until new leader found)

Working with the Salvation Army in downtown Mount Vernon through an after school (tutoring type) program.

Urban ministries focused group. Travels to a variety of urban areas throughout the course of the year, and assist established ministries in whatever ways possible.

When: Weekend trips throughout the year
Where: Various locations depending on trip.

One Way

Travels to churches and organizations throughout the year to minister through music, drama and social interaction.

Travels to Vernon Ridge Apartment Complex to hang out, read Bible stories, play games, make crafts, and eat PB&J with the children of residents in the Complex.

When: Tuesdays- meet in chapel lobby @ 5:30pm (also meet at 5:00pm for dinner in caf; optional); return around 7pm

Swahili for "rest". This is our homeless ministry outreach group. Students have the opportunity to go to Winter Sanctuary and visit with men, women and children.

Students Making an Impact in the Lives of the Elderly ministers to the elderly community residing at Country Club through hymns, fellowship and various activities.

When: Meets in cafeteria lobby on Sundays at 5:40 pm and returns around 7:30 pm
Where: Country Club Retirement Home


(Society of Cougar Nurses) A group exclusive to Nursing Majors. They coordinate various events throughout the year revolving around the nursing program.

(Students striving To Reach Individuals with Various Exceptionalities) A group that serves at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center by socializing and doing activities with adults that are developmentally delayed in varying degrees.

When: Leaves on Wednesdays at 6:15 pm and returns around 7:30 pm; contact leader for departing location

This group meets once a week to knit. The knitted items are donated to various organizations and locations; even other CoSMO groups.

Traffic Jam

A group determined to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking, locally and globally, by hosting campus events, and partnering with local and global organizations.

Transition Mission

Reaches out to the developmentally delayed students from Knox county (middle school and high school) through crafts, fun activities and fellowship.

A group that socializes and discusses faith with Mulberry St. UMC church members and community youth on Saturday nights.

When: Saturday nights-- leave chapel @ 6:30pm; return around 10:30pm
