GEORGETOWN, Ky. (9-8-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three in a row in dramatic fashion on Saturday night with a golden goal in double overtime for a 2-1 non-conference win at Georgetown (Ky.) College.

After a scoreless first half, the action heated up early in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Megan Griffith took a cross from senior forward Jessica Linger in the 55th minute and gave the Lady Cougars (4-2) a 1-0 lead as she scored her first goal of the season.

However, the host Lady Tigers (0-1) wasted little time in answering when just five minutes later Caitlin Williams knotted the match at 1-1 with the equalizer off an assist from Anna Ayers.

The score remained that way through the rest of regulation and the first of two 10-minute golden goal overtime periods. Then, in the second extra session with time winding down and only 3:12 left on the clock, Griffith struck again as she knocked in the game-winning golden goal to give MVNU the 2-1 victory.

The Lady Cougars held a 26-14 advantage in total shots in the match and a 10-7 edge in shots on goal, while Georgetown led 6-1 in corner kicks. Sophomore goalies Lexus Andolino and Eleni Miller combined to stop six shots on goal, while the Tigers' Kelsey Givens posted eight saves.

"I couldn't be more proud of how our team came out to play today," said MVNU coach Daniel Seiffert. "It was a total team effort for 107 minutes and I was just really pleased with how we moved the ball, created opportunities, got everyone into the attack, and got back on defense. This was one of the better games that we have played all year. We are starting to gel and grow together at the right time."

"The girls worked hard, were resilient, and kept fighting today," Seiffert added. "They didn't give up and I love that kind of relentlessness to get the result that we wanted. We give God all the praise, glory, and honor in everything that we do, and I am really pleased with how the girls handled themselves on and off the field as young women of Christ."

MVNU will return to action next Friday at home when the Lady Cougars will host the four-team Lady Cougar Classic. The first match at 2 p.m. will feature Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College versus Madonna (Mich.) University followed by MVNU taking on Campbellsville (Ky.) University at 4 p.m. Then, the action will continue on Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

"It's nice to be done with our stretch of five matches in nine days, but it's still a short turnaround time for the next one," said Seiffert. "We are happy that we get a few days off to recoup and get healthy as we heal up our injuries. I'm proud of the work that girls have put in during this time, and we are looking forward to hosting the Lady Cougar Classic next weekend."
