FORT WAYNE, Ind. (9-27-2011) - After claiming at least a share of four American Mideast Conference regular-season titles during the program's first 11 years of existence, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team got off to a good start in its new conference as the Lady Cougars posted a 1-0 road shutout at the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Mid-Central College Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Playing in gusty winds on a very wet field, MVNU (4-4-1, 1-0 MCC) got all the offense that the Lady Cougars would need in the 40th minute when sophomore forward Rachel Coyne (left) found the back of the net to put MVNU on top 1-0. Sophomores Sara Lipstraw and Amy Weaver were both credited with an assist on the play as the Lady Cougars took the one-goal lead to the half.

That lead would end up holding up as Coyne's second goal of the season also proved to be her second game-winning goal of the year as neither team was able to score in the second half. MVNU finished with a 15-6 advantage in total shots, a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, and a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. Freshmen goalkeepers Eleni Miller and Lexus Andolino combined to stop five shots in posting the Lady Cougars' second shutout of the season,, while Ashley Holt had eight saves for Saint Francis.

"I was very pleased with our performance tonight, especially coming out and battling the conditions," said MVNU coach Daniel Seiffert. "It was pretty wet and the field was a bit soggy, but the girls possessed the ball quite well regardless. We created a number of good opportunities and we're very happy that we were able to put one of those away. It was definitely a physical match between two tough teams."

"We'll take this first win in the conference and get ready to build on it this weekend," Seiffert added. "We've got a tough match ahead this weekend. We'll enjoy this win now and get back to work tomorrow as we prep for that one."

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday when they will travel to NAIA No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan University for another MCC match that will kick off at 1 p.m.
