SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (8-27-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team equalized with less than five minutes to go in regulation and then battled host John Brown (Ark.) University to a 1-1 double overtime draw in action at the John Brown Classic on Saturday afternoon between two teams who received votes in the NAIA preseason poll.

The Lady Cougars (0-1-1) fell behind early for the second straight match as the Lady Eagles (1-0-1) got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute when Elizabeth High scored for John Brown.

That lead held up until the 86th minute when junior defender Stacy Culbertson (left) found the back of the net for the first time in her career on a free kick into the upper 90 to knot the score at 1-1.

The score would remain tied through the rest of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods as the match ended in a double overtime draw.

MVNU held an 18-17 advantage in total shots in the match, an 11-10 edge in shots on goal, and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Eleni Miller posted nine saves for the Lady Cougars, while Faith Thurman stopped 10 shots for the Lady Eagles.

"I was much more pleased with the way that we came out in today's match," said MVNU coach Daniel Seiffert. "Yesterday, we knew that it was not the way we normally played. For the girls to bounce back, I was really pleased. The best way to describe their performance today was resilient."

"Despite going down 1-0 early on, I was pleased with the way that we played and we took a couple of big steps forward," Seiffert added. "John Brown is definitely a good team and this was a match between two good squads. We still have plenty of things to work on and we'll get back to that on Monday."

"This trip has been a great one," said Seiffert of the team's opening weekend. "We got to take on two very talented teams. The girls had a blast and it was a good team bonding experience. We'll look forward to getting better one day at a time and give God all the glory and honor while preparing for another good team next weekend."

The Lady Cougars will return to action next Saturday when they travel to the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) for a 3 p.m. non-conference match.
