written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

BOXSCORE

INDIANOLA, Pa. (9-23-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team made it two straight wins as the Lady Cougars downed Carlow (Pa.) University 4-1 in American Mideast Conference action on Tuesday night at Founder’s Field.

MVNU (4-5-0, 2-2-0 AMC) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as senior forward Page Miller took a through ball from sophomore forward Jessica Estep and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead for the Lady Cougars. It was the third goal of the season for Page Miller and the 24th of her career.

Just over 10 minutes later, Estep took a pass from senior midfielder Erin Miller and scored to extend the lead to 2-0. The goal was the sixth of the year for Estep and the assist gave Erin Miller three on the season.

In the 30th minute, the Celtics (1-7-0, 0-5-0 AMC) cut the lead in half when Lauren Cassler gathered a loose ball in the box that the defense failed to clear and scored to make it 2-1.

The score remained that way until the start of the second half when less than three minutes into the final period freshman Sarah Buehler (left) took a pass from Erin Miller off a corner kick and scored her first career goal as MVNU’s lead grew to 3-1.

Then, in the 54th minute, Estep closed out the scoring when she took a cross from Buehler in the box and found the back of the net to make it 4-1. It was Estep’s team-leading seventh goal of the season and gave her 29 goals for her career.

Freshman Courtney Ball and sophomore Jenessa Loewen combined to stop one shot on goal for the Lady Cougars, while Polly Rickabaugh posted six saves for Carlow.

“After we took the quick lead in the first half, we got a little bit sloppy,” said MVNU coach Jonathan Meade. “We talked about that at halftime and I challenged the team to play at the high standard that we set for ourselves. We were more consistent in the second half and I was pleased with the high level of our play after the break.”

The Lady Cougars will look to continue their winning streak when the team travels to Shawnee State University on Saturday for another conference match that is slated to kick off at 2:00 p.m.
