written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

BOXSCORE

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (10-21-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team scored two second-half goals and registered its sixth shutout of the season in posting a 2-0 American Mideast Conference victory at Ursuline College on Tuesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half that saw both teams take six shots apiece, the visiting Lady Cougars (8-6-1, 6-3-1 AMC) were finally able to get things going in the second half. In the 51st minute, sophomore forward Jessica Estep ran on to a long pass from sophomore defender Denée Stentz, dribbled past a defender, and ripped a shot from the right side into the far side netting for a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the team-leading 13th of the season for Estep and the 35th of her young career.

Less than 12 minutes later, senior forward Page Miller got into the scoring act when she also sent a shot from the right side of the field into the far side netting to put MVNU in front 2-0 with 27:11 left in the match. The goal was Miller’s fifth of the season and the 26th of her career.

That would prove to be the final score as the Lady Cougars allowed the Arrows (2-13-1, 1-10-1 AMC) just two shots in the second half to finish with a commanding 21-8 advantage in total shots for the game and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. MVNU also led 11-3 in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jenessa Loewen (above) registered three saves for the Lady Cougars as she notched her fourth shutout of the season and the team’s sixth of the year. Meanwhile, Steph Kasza stopped six shots for Ursuline.

“It was nice to pick up another three points (for the win) in conference play,” said MVNU coach Jonathan Meade. “At this point in the season, that is the most important thing. They put together a game plan that gave them the best chance to stay in the match and they were able to do just that. I thought we made the necessary adjustments in the second half and were able to get the goals that we needed to win the match.”

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when the team will host Daemen (N.Y.) College in another AMC contest. MVNU’s Student Government Association will also be sponsoring Dime-A-Dog Day in conjunction with the match.
