Host Ohio Dominican
University scored in the first four minutes
of the match and then got the game-winning
goal on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute as
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1
American Mideast Conference decision on the
road on Tuesday night.
The
Lady Panthers (7-4-2, 6-1-2 AMC), who shared
the AMC South Division title with the Lady
Cougars last year, took an early 1-0 lead
just 3:06 into the match when Sierra
Patterson followed up her own shot. MVNU
sophomore goalkeeper Jenessa Loewen stopped
the initial shot, but the rebound bounced
right back to Patterson for the score.
The goal also snapped Loewen's scoreless
streak at 417:04.
The score remained that way until early
in the second half when the Lady Cougars
(7-6-1, 5-3-1 AMC) equalized. Sophomore
midfielder Jamie Blair cut a pass to
sophomore forward Jessica Estep (left)
as two defenders moved to cover senior
midfielder Erin Miller, who was also open on
the play. Estep worked her way around the
defenders and scored her team-leading 12th
goal of the season to knot the match at 1-1
in the 51st minute.
The match appeared to possibly be heading
to overtime when with 8:22 remaining an Ohio
Dominican player was fouled in the box. Anna
Cameron converted the penalty kick
opportunity despite a valiant effort by
Loewen, who guessed right but could not stop
the shot as the Lady Panthers took the 2-1
lead that would hold up.
Ohio Dominican held a 10-8 edge in total
shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal
while corner kicks were event at 3-3. Loewen
posted five saves for the Lady Cougars,
while Becky Williams and Aimee Simonet each
played a half in goal for the Lady Panthers
and registered two saves apiece.
“This was a good back-and-forth soccer
match between two evenly matched teams,”
said MVNU coach Jonathan Meade. “Despite
getting behind early, I thought we played
well at the end of the first half and came
out and played well in the second half. Our
team continues to get better and despite the
outcome I saw a lot of positive signs. If we
keep working hard, we have a chance to peak
at the right time and still do some special
things this season.”
The Lady Cougars will not play again this
week and will return to action next Tuesday
when the team travels to Ursuline College
for another conference match that will start
at 3:30 p.m.
