Lady Cougars Down Grace 3-1 for Second Straight Win
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

BOXSCORE

WINONA LAKE, Ind. (9-8-2007) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team won its second straight match as the Lady Cougars downed Grace (Ind.) College 3-1 in a non-conference road match on Saturday afternoon.

Junior forward Page Miller (left) got MVNU (3-2-0) on the scoreboard in the sixth minute as she took a pass from sophomore defender Erin Miller and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead as she notched her first goal of the season.

The score remained that way for the remainder of the first half and into the beginning of the second half when senior forward Kristy Brandolini received a pass from sophomore defender Angie Misamore, who had dribbled through the defense before slipping the pass through. Brandolini fired home a shot for her team-leading fourth goal of the season and the 60th of her career as the Lady Cougars went up 2-0 in the 50th minute.

The host Lady Lancers (0-3-0) trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the 73rd minute when Natalie Anderson scored off a cross from Aubrey Evans.

However, MVNU closed out the scoring and secured the victory with just two seconds left in the match when Page Miller dribbled through the Grace defense and scored her second goal of the match to put the cap on the 3-1 win.

Senior goalkeeper Melissa Peters started and played 61 minutes in goal for the Lady Cougars and posted a save, while freshman Jenessa Loewen played 29 minutes. Rochelle Hall played the entire match for the Lady Lancers and posted three saves.

“It is always nice to get a win when you have to get up really early and travel over four hours to play,” said MVNU head coach Jonathan Meade. “We had to rush through our warm-up, but we came out and played pretty hard. It was kind of a sloppy match from a creative side of things from our standpoint. We got the win, but we need to keep working on things. Our creative play was not there today, but we’ll take it.”

“Melissa did a nice job in goal for us and came up with a big save for us late,” Meade added. “Most of the players were playing hard, and our back line is becoming more and more solid. Angie and Stacy (Robey) played really well today and solidified the back. Erin (Miller) continues to impress me and play hard.”

MVNU will return to action on Friday when the Lady Cougars will host the annual W.g. Grinders Cougar Classic Invitational. Berry (Ga.) College will take on Notre Dame College at 2:00 p.m. followed by a meeting between MVNU and Nyack (N.Y.) College at 4:00 p.m.
