MVNC, the sixth seed, took fourth place in the 1998 NCCAA National Tournament as the Lady Cougars dropped a hard-fought 68-62 decision to fifth-seeded Oakland City. MVNC led 32-22 at the half, but the physical Lady Oaks came back strong in the second half to take the lead. Oakland City held off the Lady Cougars by connecting on 22-of-28 second-half free throw attempts. Tara Seiter, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led MVNC with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Amie Bibby and Anne Nussbaum each added 16 points with four three-pointers apiece. March 13, Indiana Wesleyan University
The sixth-seeded Lady Cougars rallied in the second half once again, but Indiana Wesleyan, the seventh seed, pulled away down the stretch for an 86-77 win in the semifinals of the 1998 NCCAA National Tournament. MVNC came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to take a four-point lead in the second half before the Lady Wildcats regained control. March 12, vs. Trinity Christian (IL) College
Sixth-seeded MVNC began play in the 1998 NCCAA National Tournament with an exciting 75-68 upset victory over third-seeded Trinity Christian in overtime. The Lady Cougars rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit against the taller Lady Trolls to tie the score at 66-66 at the end of regulation as Tara Seiter nailed two free throws. In overtime, Shelly Aldrich scored six points as MVNC pulled away for the win. Seiter led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Anne Nussbaum added 18 points with five three-pointers. The Lady Cougars knocked off top-seeded Roberts Wesleyan 74-58 in the NCCAA East Region Tournament championship game to earn an automatic berth in the 1998 NCCAA National Tournament. March 5, NYACK (NY) COLLEGE
Making its first appearance in the NCCAA East Region Tournament in four years, MVNC defeated Nyack 82-50 in the semifinals. The Lady Cougars were led by Tara Seiter with 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field, while Shelly Aldrich added 15 points and five assists. The visiting Lady Panthers shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded MVNC 41-29 to pull away for the win. Behind a great effort from the bench and a strong second half, MVNC downed Ohio Dominican 78-58 in Mid-Ohio Conference action to avenge an earlier loss to the Lady Panthers. The Lady Cougars' bench combined for 35 points, and MVNC outscored the Lady Panthers 41-24 in the second half as the Lady Cougars limited them to 19 percent second-half shooting. MVNC had its four-game winning streak snapped as conference-leading Walsh claimed a 66-63 Mid-Ohio Conference victory in overtime. The Lady Cougars notched the biggest upset in their 21-year history with a 73-62 upset victory over Shawnee State, ranked #3 in NAIA Division II, in Mid-Ohio Conference action. After being tied 27-27 at the half, MVNC began the second half with a 12-0 run to take a 39-27 lead with 15:49 remaining. From that point on, the Lady Bears could get no closer than seven points. Shelly Aldrich and Tara Seiter each scored 16 points, while Anne Nussbaum added 11 points. Seiter became the eighth MVNC player and first junior to reach the 1,000 point mark for her career. MVNC extended its winning streak to a season-high three straight games with a 77-65 Mid-Ohio Conference victory over Cedarville. After a Yellow Jacket basket with 4:28 left in the game cut the Lady Cougars lead to 66-65, MVNC closed the game with an 11-0 run. Amber Rice led the way with a team-high 19 points off the bench. The Lady Cougars won their second straight contest with a 69-55 Mid-Ohio Conference victory over Malone. MVNC built a 39-22 lead going into the locker room at the half, but the Lady Pioneers closed to within 53-49 with 6:50 remaining in the game. For the second straight year, MVNC shocked the Lady Blue Knights on their home floor as the Lady Cougars upset Urbana, ranked #17 in the latest NAIA Division II poll, 63-62. After the Lady Blue Knights took the lead on a basket with two seconds remaining, Amber Rice nailed a three-pointer from just inside half court as the buzzer sounded for the victory. January 3, UNIVERSITY OF RIO GRANDE
The Lady Cougars suffered their second straight close loss as MVNC fell 68-64 to Rio Grande in a Mid-Ohio Conference game. The Lady Cougars led 32-28 at the half and held a 49-41 lead with 10:34 left in the contest. However, the Redwomen went on a 13-0 run to take a 54-49 lead with 7:26 remaining. MVNC closed to within one point twice down the stretch, but Rio Grande hit 10-of-12 free throws in the second half to keep the lead. Central State used an overwhelming rebounding advantage and placed six players in double figures as the Lady Marauders, ranked #9 in the NAIA Division I preseason poll, rolled to a 95-49 non-conference victory.
