PIPPA PASSES, Ky. (12-17-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team weathered a 16-2 first-half run and then answered every charge in the second half as the Lady Cougars posted a 72-65 non-conference victory at Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College on Saturday afternoon.

MVNU (7-3) built an early 14-5 lead over the first seven minutes of action, but the host Lady Eagles (1-14) responded with a 16-2 run of their own to go in front 21-16 with nine minutes left in the first half.

Alice Lloyd still held a 32-27 lead with just under three minutes remaining before the break, but five points from senior forward Alexis Harkins and a free throw each by senior guards Sierra Fletcher (left) and Ashley Jessie helped the Lady Cougars take a 34-32 advantage to the locker room at the half.

Senior post Whitney Levering led MVNU with 10 points in the first half, while Fletcher added seven points. The Lady Cougars shot 47.8 percent from the field (11-for-23), 33.3 percent from 3-point range (3-for-9), and 56.3 percent from the free throw line. MVNU also held a 21-14 rebounding lead.

Ariel Nickell paced the Lady Eagles with nine points in the first half, while Gemma Gray added eight points. Alice Lloyd shot 35.7 percent from the field (10-for-28), 22.2 percent from 3-point range (2-for-9), and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (10-for-12).

After Nickell tied the game up with a basket to start the second half, the Lady Cougars used a 13-4 run to build a 47-38 advantage with 16:00 to go as junior guard Melissa Eickholt capped the surge with a trey.

The Lady Eagles closed the gap to 62-59 following a trey by Gray with 5:59 to go as Alice Lloyd refused to go down without a fight.

However, eight straight points by MVNU including six from Levering gave the Lady Cougars their biggest lead of the game at 70-59 with less than three minutes to go. From there, MVNU was able to hold on to post the 72-65 victory.

"What a good game to go to break on," said MVNU coach Jason Foster. "The girls played hard with life and emotion and when called upon they did their job. Rachel (Peelman) was a great defensive presence today. She did a great job guarding both of their top two players."

"We still need to work on establishing our will in a game as I felt that we played to (Alice Lloyd's) tempo a little too much. They are much improved and really battled us start to finish, but our kids just kept working and working to get this win."

Fletcher led the Lady Cougars with 20 points, six assists, and five rebounds as she went 10-for-13 at the free throw line. Levering added 18 points and six rebounds, while Harkins and sophomore post Amy Daniels finished with nine points apiece. MVNU shot 45.3 percent from the field (24-for-53), 30.4 percent from 3-point range (7-for-23), and 60.7 percent from the free throw line (17-for-28).

Gray paced Alice Lloyd with 23 points, while Nickell added 17 points before fouling out midway through the second half. Carla McDaniel also posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Eagles shot 40.4 percent from the field (21-for-52), 21.4 percent from 3-point range (3-for-14), and 76.9 percent from the free throw line.

The Lady Cougars will now take a break for Christmas before returning to action with a non-conference game at the University of Cincinnati-Clermont on December 27 at 2 p.m.
