DEFIANCE, Ohio (12-18-2009) - The
Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
basketball team was outplayed in every facet
of the game as the Lady Cougars fell 85-62
to Wilmington College in the first round of
the Defiance College Tournament on Friday
night.
MVNU (6-2) got off to a good start in the
game as sophomore guard Sierra Fletcher hit
a three-pointer and a jumper in the first
1:05 to give the Lady Cougars a quick 5-1
lead.
However, the Lady Quakers (4-4) would
proceed to outscore MVNU 35-18 over the
remainder of the half as Wilmington built a
36-23 halftime lead.
The Lady Cougars shot just 24.3 percent from
the field in the first half (9-for-37), 11.8
percent from three-point range (2-for-17),
and 75 percent from the free throw line
(3-for-4). Fletcher led the way with eight
points, and MVNU was outrebounded 30-24.
Claire
Brown paced the Lady Quakers with seven
points and eight rebounds. Wilmington shot
37.8 percent from the field (14-for-37),
37.5 percent from three-point range
(6-for-16), and 50 percent from the free
throw line (2-for-4).
The Lady Cougars appeared to be ready to
mount a comeback in the second half as MVNU
used a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 38-32
less than two minutes into the final period
as sophomore wing Alexis Harkins
(left) scored four points, Fletcher
hit three free throw attempts, and junior
post Amanda Himes added a basket.
The Lady Cougars still were within 54-46
with 10:02 to play following a three-pointer
by junior wing Kelli Pollock. However, a
21-6 run for the Lady Quakers over the next
five and a half minutes pushed Wilmington’s
lead out to 75-52 with 4:27 to go.
MVNU was able to close the gap to 79-62 with
2:42 remaining on a trey by Harkins, but the
Lady Cougars went 0-for-2 from the field,
0-for-1 at the free throw line, and
committed three turnovers down the stretch
as Wilmington pulled away for the 85-62
victory.
"To say that I am extremely disappointed
with our effort tonight would be a major
understatement,” said MVNU coach Steve
Gregory. "(Wilmington) is a good enough team
- they didn’t need any help on our part. We
settled for far too many perimeter shots and
didn’t attack the basket enough. They
seemingly got all the loose balls and
offensive rebounds in the first half. Their
bench outplayed our bench. It was a tough
game to be a part of.”
"There were very few bright spots in this
game,” Gregory continued. "They completely
outplayed us tonight and deserve the credit.
They executed their game plan and made the
plays whenever they needed them. We’ve got
to go back to work and try to earn a win
tomorrow in the consolation game.”
Fletcher finished with 16 points to lead the
Lady Cougars before fouling out, while Himes
added 12 points and nine rebounds. Junior
forward Kellie Jokela tallied 10 points, and
Harkins tossed in nine points. MVNU shot
just 31.2 percent from the field for the
game (24-for-77), 20 percent from
three-point range (7-for-35), and 70 percent
from the free throw line (7-for-10).
Brown led five Lady Quakers in double
figures with 15 points and 10 rebounds,
while Steph Prechtel tossed in 14 points off
the bench. Allie Meranda added 12 points,
and Kortney Kin had a double-double with 11
points and 10 rebounds. Olivia Waters also
contributed 10 points. Wilmington shot 41.4
percent from the field (29-for-70), 42.9
percent from three-point range (12-for-28),
and 71.4 percent from the free throw line
(15-for-21). The Lady Quakers also led 56-43
in rebounds.
The Lady Cougars will return to action at
1:00 p.m. when MVNU will take on Albion
(Mich.) College in the consolation game of
the tournament. Albion (4-4) fell to host
Defiance 73-56 in Friday’s other first round
game.
