WILBERFORCE, Ohio (2-18-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team built a comfortable halftime lead and cruised to an 80-58 American Mideast Conference road victory at Wilberforce University on Thursday evening in the Alumni Multiplex.

The Lady Cougars (18-7, 11-6 AMC) shot 57.1 percent from the field (16-for-28) and three-point range (4-for-7) in the first half while holding the host Lady Bulldogs (5-22, 3-15 AMC) to just 30.3 percent shooting from the field (10-for-33) and only 15.4 percent shooting from three-point range (3-for-17) as MVNU built a 43-24 advantage by the break.

Junior center Amanda Himes led the Lady Cougars with 12 points and seven rebounds in the first half, while sophomore guard Sierra Fletcher (left) added 10 points and six assists. Junior guard Lauren Johnson also tossed in eight points. MVNU had a 21-15 rebounding edge at the break.

The second half was more evenly contested as the Lady Cougars committed 16 turnovers in the second half to allow Wilberforce an opportunity to chip into the lead.

However, MVNU was able to pull away down the stretch to post a comfortable 80-58 victory and snap a brief two-game losing skid.

"I am happy to get back on track and get a win on the road,” said MVNU coach Steve Gregory. "We got out to an early lead and then got a little complacent and allowed Wilberforce to get back into the game. We put together a nice run to end the half and got into the locker room up by 19.”

"The second half was a half where we held a comfortable lead and were able to maintain it throughout while also playing a lot of people,” Gregory added. "We were able to get our starters some rest with being in the midst of three consecutive games. That is a good thing with Shawnee State coming to town tomorrow.”

Himes finished with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds as she went 9-for-13 from the floor. Johnson scored 12 points and handed out five assists, and sophomore wing Alexis Harkins tossed in 11 points off the bench. Fletcher also posted a double-double with 10 points and a career-high-tying 10 assists, and she broke the school’s single-season steals record as she now has 115 steals in just 25 games to pass the mark of 113 steals set by former Lady Cougar standout Rachel Fiely last year. MVNU shot 49.2 percent from the field for the game (31-for-63), 34.6 percent from three-point range (9-for-26), and 75 percent from the free throw line (9-for-12). The Lady Cougars also held a 47-36 rebounding advantage.

Dai’Tiara Brown led Wilberforce with 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Deidra Brown and DeBorah Wilson each added 12 points apiece. The Lady Bulldogs shot 34.3 percent from the field (24-for-70), 17.6 percent from three-point range (3-for-17), and 41.2 percent from the free throw stripe (7-for-17).

MVNU will return to action on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when the Cougars will host NAIA Division II No. 8 Shawnee State University.
