MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (1-26-2010) -  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team matched its season high by nailing 14 three-pointers and the Lady Cougars also equaled their season best by forcing 31 turnovers which they turned into 49 points as MVNU posted a 100-38 American Mideast Conference victory over Carlow (Pa.) University in the Physical Education Center on Tuesday night.

The Lady Cougars (12-5, 5-4 AMC), who received a vote in the latest NAIA Division II poll, jumped out to a quick 16-6 lead over the first six minutes as junior wing Kelli Pollock nailed a pair of treys and sophomore guard Sierra Fletcher and junior forward Kellie Jokela each added a three-pointer of their own as MVNU went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

After the visiting Celtics (6-15, 2-10 AMC) closed the gap to 19-13 at the 11:51 mark, the Lady Cougars closed the half on a 38-12 run to take a commanding 57-25 lead at the break. MVNU forced 16 first-half turnovers which the Lady Cougars turned into 26 points. Meanwhile, MVNU committed just three turnovers of its own.

Fletcher led the Lady Cougars with 12 points, four assists, and four steals in the first half. Junior guard Lauren Johnson, junior center Amanda Himes, and sophomore guard Gabby Fowler (left) also added eight points apiece. MVNU shot a blistering 55 percent from the field (22-for-40), 64.3 percent from three-point range (9-for-14), and 57.1 percent from the free throw line (4-for-7).

"We got off to a good start and staked ourselves to an early lead,” said MVNU coach Steve Gregory. "By the end of the half, that small lead grew into a large lead. We shot the ball well in the first half behind the three-point line. They decided to play us zone and our perimeter shooters stepped up and hit shots.”

Shelby Rodgers paced Carlow with 10 first-half points and five rebounds, while Trenecia Carroll tossed in six points off the bench. The Celtics shot 37 percent from the field (10-for-27), 25 percent from three-point range (2-for-8), and 75 percent at the free throw line (3-for-4).

Rodgers hit a three-pointer to start the second half for Carlow, but that would prove to be the last highlight of the night for the Celtics. From that point on, the Lady Cougars outscored Carlow 43-10 the rest of the game on the way to the 100-38 victory. Freshman wing Camaranne Myles hit a pair of free throws with 1:18 left to help MVNU hit the century mark for the first time since a 121-21 shellacking of Ohio State University-Marion on December 4, 2007.

"The second half was more of the same,” said Gregory. "I don’t know that it was great defense in the second half. I think there is some truth in the fact that they just missed a lot of shots in the second half.”

Freshman guard Jessi Drayer (right) had a big night to lead MVNU off the bench as she scored a game- and career-high 19 points to go with five steals. Fletcher added 18 points, five assists, and five steals, and Himes posted a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. Fowler also matched her career high with 11 points to go with a career-high five assists. Every player on the roster scored for the Lady Cougars with the exception of freshman Courtney Swart, who instead grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and blocked three shots to make her presence felt. Pollock and Johnson finished with eight points apiece, and Jokela added seven points and five rebounds.

MVNU shot 46.3 percent from the field (38-for-82), 41.2 percent from three-point range (14-for-34), and 66.7 percent from the free throw line (10-for-15). The Lady Cougars committed just nine turnovers and forced 31 miscues which they turned into 49 points. The MVNU reserves also outscored Carlow as a whole with 44 bench points.

"Jessi stepped up and showed why she was such a highly-decorated high school player last year,” said Gregory. "She is a playmaker and can shoot the three-pointer. It was good to see her play well tonight.”

"Amanda and Sierra both did their usual damage and helped us get out to a big lead,” Gregory added. "Gabby shot the ball well, and Kellie also stuck some nice mid-range jumpers against their zone. Courtney was a rebounding machine along with Himes. It was nice to see everyone play and play well at that.”

Rodgers led Carlow with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Carroll was the next highest scorer with six points. Danielle Lindsey also grabbed nine rebounds before fouling out. The Celtics shot just 25.9 percent from the field (14-for-54) including going just 4-for-27 in the second half (14.8 percent). Carlow also went 5-for-20 from three-point range (25 percent) and 5-for-15 at the free throw line (33.3 percent).

The Lady Cougars will look to add to their two-game winning streak when the team embarks on an important American Mideast Conference road trip to New York this weekend. On Friday, MVNU will play at Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College with a 6:00 p.m. tip before playing at Houghton (N.Y.) College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
