Lady Cougars Enjoy Record-Setting Night Versus OSU-Marion

MARION, Ohio. (12-4-2007) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team set four school records and saw numerous players record career highs as the Lady Cougars cruised to a 121-21 non-conference victory at Ohio State University-Marion on Tuesday night to extend the team’s winning streak to six in a row.

MVNU (8-1) scored the first 12 points of the game and jumped out to a 31-3 lead before the Scarlet Wave (2-5) even recorded its first field goal attempt of the game at the 12:44 mark as Ohio State-Marion turned the ball over 15 times in the first 7:16.

The lead grew to 68-13 at the half as the Lady Cougars broke the school record for most points in a half set earlier this season in a home game against the Scarlet Wave when MVNU scored 66 points in the first half of the 118-31 victory.

Freshman center Amanda Himes led the Lady Cougars with 13 first-half points as she went 6-for-8 in just seven minutes off the bench. Junior post Melissa Mastrodonato added 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting in just eight minutes, while junior guard Rachel Fiely and freshman guard Lauren Johnson (left) both had eight points with Johnson registering seven steals. MVNU shot 54.2 percent from the field (26-for-48), 28.6 percent from three-point range (4-for-14), and 63.2 percent at the free throw line (12-for-19).

Gwen Yost and Bethany White both scored four points to lead Ohio State-Marion in the first half. The Scarlet Wave committed 29 turnovers while shooting just 26.7 percent from the field (4-for-15).

The Lady Cougars’ lead continued to grow in the second half as Ohio State-Marion shot just 11.1 percent from the field (3-for-27) despite MVNU playing a half-court zone. The Lady Cougars reached the 100-point mark with 8:33 to play on a jumper by junior guard Bethany Hughes.

A pair of free throws by freshman forward Jackie Albrecht put MVNU in front 119-21 with 1:30 to play as the Lady Cougars broke the previous school record for points in a game set with the 118 points earlier this year in the first meeting with the Scarlet Wave. Then, freshman guard Kassy Workinger nailed a jumper with 37 seconds to play to put MVNU in front by 100 points to cap off the 121-21 victory.

Himes led the Lady Cougars with 18 points in just 13 minutes off the bench, while Mastrodonato finished with 16 points in 13 minutes. Freshman guard Kelli Pollock tallied 12 points with a career-high nine rebounds off the bench, while Johnson contributed 10 points, eight steals, and a career-high six assists. Hughes (right) posted career highs of nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Kim BeVier also scored a career-high nine points. Junior guard Jessica Lynn also added nine points, while Fiely and senior forward Amy Sebastian registered eight points apiece with Fiely dishing out nine assists. Freshman guard Lindsay Stein (7), Albrecht (5), Workinger (4), sophomore post Amanda Thorne (4), and freshman forward Kellie Jokela (2) rounded out the scoring as everyone on the roster scored.

MVNU shot 53.6 percent from the field (45-for-84), 33.3 percent from three-point range (8-for-24), and 69.7 percent from the free throw line (23-for-33). The Lady Cougars posted a commanding 53-28 rebounding advantage and registered a school-record 35 steals to go with 30 assists.

Ohio State-Marion was led by White with nine points and five rebounds, while Yost finished with four points. The Scarlet Wave, which matched the school record for fewest points allowed in a half with just eight in the second half, finished the game shooting 16.7 percent from the field overall (7-for-42), 6.2 percent from three-point range (1-for-16), and 85.7 percent from the free throw line (6-for-7). They had more turnovers (45) than field goals attempted (42) in the game.

MVNU will return to action on Thursday when the Lady Cougars will travel to county rival Kenyon College for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game. The Ladies are currently 2-4 with three of their first six opponents being ranked teams.
