MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (11-10-2007) - Despite the start of the game being pushed back until 9:00 p.m. due to the American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region IX Volleyball Tournament taking place in the Physical Education Center earlier in the day, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team showed no signs of putting its offense to bed early as the Lady Cougars set five school records in cruising past Ohio State University-Marion 118-31 on Saturday night in non-conference action.

After MVNU freshman forward Kellie Jokela opened the game with a layup and B.J. Wilds answered with a pair of free throws for the visiting Scarlet Wave (0-2) to knot the score at 2-2, the host Lady Cougars (2-0) rattled off 23 unanswered points to take a 25-2 lead at the 10:49 mark. Junior center Melissa Mastrodonato (left) led the surge for MVNU with seven points.

The Lady Cougars’ lead continued to grow as Ohio State-Marion did not hit its first field goal until a jumper by Jessica Price with 6:08 left before halftime cut the lead to 44-9. The Scarlet Wave had 20 turnovers up to that point and had gone 0-for-8 from the field before Price connected.

MVNU held a 66-18 lead at the half as the Lady Cougars eclipsed the previous school record for points in a half set against Ohio State University-Newark during the 2005-2006 season with 62. Mastrodonato led the way with 13 points, while junior guard Rachel Fiely added 11 points. MVNU shot a blistering 61.9 percent from the field (26-for-42) and 11 of the 12 players who dressed scored at least two points in the first half alone. The Lady Cougars’ defense also limited Ohio State-Marion to just 17.6 percent shooting from the field (3-for-17) and forced 22 turnovers.

MVNU continued to build on its lead in the second half despite playing every member of the team at least 10 minutes. At the 6:52 mark of the second half, senior forward Amy Sebastian (right) became the first player in Lady Cougar history to post a triple-double as she registered her career-high 10th assist to go with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

In addition to the record for points in a half, MVNU set school records for points scored in a game (118), largest margin of victory (87 points), most players in double figures (8), and most assists (40). The Lady Cougars finished the game shooting 58.5 percent from the field (48-for-82) and forced 34 turnovers.

Mastrodonato led the school-record eight players in double figures with 17 points, while freshman guard Kelli Pollock tossed in a career-high 14 points. In addition to Sebastian’s performance, freshman center Amanda Himes tallied 12 points, Fiely, Jokela, and freshman guard Lauren Johnson each had 11 points, and junior guard Jessica Lynn tossed in 10 points. Jokela also had seven steals, and Fiely finished with eight assists.

“This was a fun game for all of our players as they all got to play a lot of minutes, work on a lot of different situations, and get plenty of game experience,” said MVNU head coach Steve Gregory. “Amy really stuck out today with our program’s first-ever triple-double. Our kids were very unselfish and moved the ball well.”

Gwen Yost scored 14 points to lead Ohio State-Marion, while Bethany White added nine points. The Scarlet Wave shot just 14.6 percent from the field (7-for-48) and were out-rebounded 51-30.

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday when MVNU will host Daemen (N.Y.) College at 2:00 p.m.
