Lady Cougars Sweep Season-Opening Matches

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (8-17-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team successfully got the 2012 season under way as the Lady Cougars swept at pair of matches at the Concordia (Mich.) University Invitational downing Rochester (Mich.) College 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 and Lawrence Institute of Technology (Mich.) 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 on Friday evening.

In the first match of the day against Rochester, MVNU (2-0) was led by junior middle hitter Kendra Votaw with 10 kills and two aces, while senior outside hitter Haley Nofziger pounded nine kills. Senior libero Kaylee Hewitt and freshman outside hitter/setter Shayla Pierce posted seven and five digs respectively, and senior setter Lauren Percival handed out 31 assists.

The Lady Cougars closed the day with the sweep of Lawrence Tech as Nofziger pounded a team-high nine kills and Votaw and senior middle hitter Gina Porto added eight kills each. Junior defensive specialist Morgan Pridemore served up four aces to go with seven digs, and Hewitt contributed three aces and six digs. Percival registered 30 more assists.

MVNU will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. with a match against Lourdes College. Then, the Lady Cougars will play a final match based on tournament standings at either 1 or 3 p.m.
