UPLAND, Ind. (11-8-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team put up a good fight against the top seed and regular-season Mid-Central College Conference champion Taylor (Ind.) University on Tuesday, but in the end the NAIA No. 14 Lady Trojans prevailed on their home court by the scores of 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-21 in the first round of the MCC Tournament.

Junior middle hitter Gina Porto (left) led the No. 8 seed Lady Cougars with 12 kills and four blocks, while freshman right-side hitter Molly Gerber added nine kills. Junior setter Lauren Percival handed out 23 assists to go with a team-high 18 digs, and junior libero Kaylee Hewitt posted 15 digs. In the third set win over Taylor (28-6), MVNU rallied from a 15-9 deficit to score 12 straight points to take a 21-15 lead as they went on to win that set 25-22.

"We had one bad set tonight," said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "The other three were all great sets. I am very pleased with the effort and energy with which we played. We battled them well and made them fight to win the match in the fourth set."

The Lady Cougars finish an injury-marred season with a 13-23 mark as MVNU saw its string of consecutive winning seasons come to an end at 24. However, with no seniors on the roster, the Lady Cougars will look to use the experience they gained in 2011 to benefit them when they take the court again in 2012.
