Lady Cougars Drop MCC Finale at Goshen in Five Sets

GOSHEN, Ind. (10-26-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team dropped a marathon match at Goshen (Ind.) College on Wednesday night as the Maple Leafs prevailed 26-24, 26-28, 25-15, 30-32, 16-14 in the Mid-Central College Conference finale for both teams.

Junior outside hitter Haley Nofziger led the Lady Cougars (11-19, 5-13 MCC) with 17 kills against Goshen (13-12, 8-10 MCC), which notched its season-high fifth straight victory. Junior middle hitter Gina Porto added 16 kills and seven blocks, while sophomore middle hitter Kelly Mast tallied five blocks. Junior setter Lauren Percival (left) handed out 43 assists to go with 15 digs and a career-high 12 kills as she posted her first career triple-double, and junior libero Kaylee Hewitt recorded a team-high 25 digs. Freshman right-side hitter Molly Gerber also contributed 15 digs and a team-high three aces, while freshman outside hitter Hannah Rehm also added 11 digs.

"This was an awesome match," said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We did a lot of good things. I am very proud of the effort and determination of all the players."

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Friday when the six-team National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament will get started with pool play matches in the Physical Education Center.  MVNU will take on Nyack (N.Y.) College at 5 p.m. followed by the Lady Cougars versus Malone University at 7 p.m. The other pool consists of Geneva (Pa.) College, Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College, and Houghton (N.Y.) College. All of the teams will advance to the single elimination portion of the tournament on Saturday starting with quarterfinals at 10 a.m.
