Lady Cougars Capture Concordia Invitational Title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (8-20-2011) - For the second straight day, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team posted a pair of sweeps as the Lady Cougars downed host Concordia (Mich.) University 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 and Rochester (Mich.) College 25-19, 25-12, 25-19 on Saturday to capture the Concordia Invitational title.

Junior middle hitter Haley Nofziger led MVNU (4-0) in the victory over Concordia (1-2) as she pounded 10 kills, while junior middle hitter Gina Porto (left) and sophomore middle hitter Kendra Votaw each smashed nine kills with Votaw adding four blocks and nine digs. Junior right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt added eight kills and two aces, and junior setter Lauren Percival handed out 30 assists to go with nine digs and two aces. Junior outside hitter Paige Hagans also led the team with a career-high 15 digs.

Porto and Votaw paced the Lady Cougars with nine kills apiece as MVNU swept Rochester (2-1). Freshman setter Hannah Rehm added eight kills and two aces, while Percival handed out 28 assists and tallied 10 digs. Hagans led the Lady Cougars with 13 digs, and Votaw and Rehm led the team with two blocks each.

For their efforts over the weekend, both Porto and Votaw were named to the All-Tournament Team as MVNU captured the first-place hardware.

"This weekend was a good way to start off the year," said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We just kept getting better each set and each match. We have a long way to go, but we did get better. We'll come back for another good week of practice and then head out for another challenging tournament next weekend."

The Lady Cougars will return to action next Friday and Saturday when MVNU will take part in the University of Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird Invitational. The Lady Cougars will take on Cornerstone (Mich.) University and the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) on Friday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. Then, on Saturday, MVNU will square off with Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College at 10 a.m. and Madonna (Mich.) University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
