INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (10-15-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team dropped a pair of
Mid-Central College Conference matches as
the Lady Cougars fell 25-14, 25-16, 25-12 at
NAIA No. 18 Indiana Wesleyan University on
Friday night and then 25-9, 25-10, 22-25,
25-17 at Marian (Ind.) University on
Saturday afternoon.
In the loss at
Indiana Wesleyan (21-4, 10-2 MCC), junior
middle hitter Gina Porto led MVNU (10-16,
4-10) with five kills, while junior
right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt, junior
outside hitter Erika Votaw, and sophomore
middle hitter Kelly Mast each had three
kills apiece. Junior setter Lauren Percival
handed out 14 assists, and junior libero
Paige Hagans and Hewitt posted 11 and 10
digs respectively.
"(Indiana
Wesleyan) is very good and we just got
out-played," said MVNU coach Paul Swanson.
"We tried hard, but we could just not get
anything going."
On Saturday, the
first two sets especially were tough for the
Lady Cougars. They rallied to take the third
set, but the Lady Knights (14-8, 8-6 MCC)
rebounded to finish the match by winning the
fourth set. Porto once again paced MVNU with
13 kills, while junior middle hitter Haley
Nofziger pounded seven kills. Percival
compiled 26 assists and six kills, and
Hewitt compiled a team-high 12 digs.
"We played very poorly in the first two sets
and then played like a different team in the
third set," said Swanson. "We gave up too
many points at the beginning of the fourth
set as we fell behind 10-3 before pulling
within 18-15. After a tough call, (Marian)
played well the rest of the way to finish
off the win."
The Lady Cougars will
return to action on Wednesday when MVNU will
host Grace (Ind.) College at 7 p.m.
