MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (10-11-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team put up a valiant effort, but it was not quite enough as the Lady Cougars fell 33-31, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 to Bethel (Ind.) College in Mid-Central College Conference action on Tuesday evening in the Physical Education Center.

In addition to the hustle and determination that MVNU (10-14, 4-8 MCC) exhibited against the Lady Pilots (12-7, 7-4 MCC), another positive for the Lady Cougars was the return of junior middle hitter Gina Porto (left), who returned to the lineup after missing the last 15 matches due to an injury. Porto led MVNU with 10 kills and two blocks, while junior middle hitter Haley Nofziger pounded nine kills. Junior setter Lauren Percival and sophomore middle hitter Kelly Mast added eight kills and two blocks apiece with Percival also handing out 28 assists to go with 11 digs. Freshman right-side hitter Molly Gerber posted a career-high 24 digs, and junior libero Paige Hagans and junior right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt tallied 13 and 12 digs respectively.

"I was pleased with our effort tonight," said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "Going into the match, most people probably thought we didn't have much of a chance. However, the frustrating and encouraging thing is that if we could have cut down on a few errors we really had a chance to win this match. I am proud of the way that the team just keeps plugging away. We need to keep making progress. It was also nice to get Gina back out on the floor tonight."

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Friday when MVNU will travel to Indiana Wesleyan University for another MCC match that will start at 7 p.m. The Lady Wildcats are ranked No. 18 in the latest NAIA national poll that was released on Tuesday afternoon.
