ANN ARBOR, Mich. (8-19-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team got the 2011 season off on the right foot as the Lady Cougars swept Marygrove (Mich.) College 25-20, 26-24, 25-16 and Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University 25-17, 25-7, 25-15 on Friday in the first day of action at the Concordia (Mich.) University Invitational.

Against Marygrove (0-1), sophomore middle hitter Kendra Votaw (left) led MVNU (2-0) with 12 kills and two blocks, while junior middle hitter Gina Porto pounded 11 kills in her first action in a real match in over 17 months after battling back from a knee injury that forced her to miss the entire 2010 season. Junior setter Lauren Percival handed out 27 assists and posted seven digs, and sophomore defensive specialist Morgan Pridemore tallied eight digs.

The Lady Cougars made quick work of Lawrence Tech (0-1) as Porto smashed 14 kills and Votaw contributed 10 kills, five blocks, and four aces. Percival handed out 27 more assists to go with two aces, while junior outside hitter Paige Hagans posted a career-high eight digs.

"It was nice to get the season started with a pair of wins," said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We did what we needed to do in order to get the wins, but we need to cut down on our errors as we move forward."

The Lady Cougars will close out play at the tournament on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against host Concordia and a noon contest against Rochester (Mich.) College.
