DAVENPORT, Iowa (8-28-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team extended its winning streak
to seven straight matches as the Lady
Cougars defeated both Hastings (Neb.)
College and host St. Ambrose (Iowa)
University on Saturday to claim the title at
the St. Ambrose University Early Bird
Tournament.
MVNU
(7-1) began the day with a sweep of Hastings
(Neb.) College (2-2) by the scores of 25-18,
25-22, 25-22 to avenge a loss to the Broncos
last year when Hastings was in the midst of
posting a 27-9 overall record. Senior middle
hitter Jackie Albrecht (left)
led the Lady Cougars with 13 kills, 10 digs,
and three blocks, while sophomore right-side
hitter Kaylee Hewitt added nine kills, three
blocks, and two aces. Sophomore setter
Lauren Percival handed out 34 assists to go
with nine digs, and senior libero Caitlin
Myles posted 27 digs. Senior middle hitter
Sarah Yutzy also pounded seven kills.
MVNU closed out the tournament against the
host Queen Bees of St. Ambrose (3-1) as both
teams entered the match having gone 3-0 in
the tournament up to that point. The Lady
Cougars posted a 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16
win over the Queen Bees, who went 35-10 last
season and advanced to the NAIA National
Championship Final Site. Albrecht, who was
named to the All-Tournament Team, led MVNU
with 22 kills, 20 digs, and five blocks,
while Yutzy also posted a double-double with
10 kills and 10 blocks. Percival, who joined
Albrecht on the All-Tournament Team, handed
out 40 assists to go with 15 digs and three
aces, and freshman outside hitter Kendra
Votaw tallied 11 kills and three blocks. In
addition, Myles posted a season-high 31
digs, while Hewitt finished with five
blocks.
"This was a great weekend for our team,”
said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We beat two
very good teams today. Our play in the back
row all weekend was the key to our success.
We were able to frustrate our opponents by
making it very difficult for them to get the
ball to the floor. We still have a lot of
room for improvement, but all of our players
really stepped up their performance on this
trip.”
MVNU will return to action on Wednesday when
the home crowd will have a chance to see the
team in person for the first time by making
the five-minute trip across town to nearby
Kenyon College. The non-conference match
will begin at 7 p.m.
