DAVENPORT, Iowa (8-27-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team swept matches from Iowa
Wesleyan College and Trinity International
(Ill.) University on Friday evening in the
first day of action at the St. Ambrose
(Iowa) University Early Bird Tournament.
In
the first match of the day, the Lady Cougars
(5-1) held off Iowa Wesleyan 25-19, 25-15,
25-10 behind 16 kills, 13 digs, and two
blocks from senior middle hitter Jackie
Albrecht. Sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee
Hewitt (left) added eight
kills, three aces, and 17 digs, while
sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out
35 assists and served up three aces. Senior
middle hitter Sarah Yutzy tallied two
blocks, and senior libero Caitlin Myles and
freshman outside hitter Courtney Briegel
posted 16 and 15 digs respectively.
MVNU got right back to action and held off a
determined Trinity International squad
26-24, 25-18, 25-14 in the Lady Cougars'
second match of the night. Albrecht led the
way again with 12 kills, while freshman
outside hitter Kendra Votaw smashed 10
kills. Percival handed out 30 assists to go
with two blocks and 15 digs, and Myles and
Hewitt contributed 15 and 14 digs
respectively. Yutzy also posted a team-high
four blocks.
"We played really well in the back row
tonight and that was the difference in both
matches,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We
made some adjustments to our lineup and the
team continued to respond in positive
fashion. It was nice to beat two quality
programs today, but we know that we have our
work cut out for us with two more tough
matches tomorrow.”
The Lady Cougars will square off with
Hastings (Neb.) College at 11 a.m. CST and
then take on the host school, St. Ambrose,
at 3 p.m. CST.
