KISSIMMEE, Fla. (12-3-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team saw its outstanding season
come to an end on Friday at the National
Christian College Athletic Association
Tournament held at the Kissimmee Civic
Center as the Lady Cougars split a pair of
pool play matches to finish tied for third
in their pool with the top two teams
advancing on to the semifinals.
MVNU
(43-6), the No. 2 seed in the 10-team
tournament, suffered a 25-17, 25-22, 25-23
setback at the hands of No. 7 seed King
(Tenn.) College (32-10) to start the day as
the Lady Cougars were swept for only the
third time this season and suffered
back-to-back losses for the first time since
October 2009. Senior middle hitter Jackie
Albrecht (left) led MVNU with
15 kills and nine digs, while sophomore
Haley Nofziger pounded eight kills.
Sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out
31 assists to go with 13 digs, and senior
libero Caitlin Myles posted 22 digs. Senior
middle hitter Sarah Yutzy led the team with
four blocks.
"(King) really played well in this match and
we struggled to get going and then just ran
out of time,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson.
"The effort and the desire were there, but
we just were not able to get the job done.”
That set the stage for a rematch of last
year's national championship match between
the Lady Cougars and No. 3 seed
Campbellsville (33-11). MVNU swept the
defending NCCAA national champs 25-21,
25-15, 25-22 to snap their nine-match NCCAA
National Tournament winning streak. Albrecht
again led the Lady Cougars with 22 kills and
15 digs, while freshman outside hitter
Kendra Votaw pounded eight kills. Percival
handed out 37 assists to go with eight digs,
and Myles and sophomore right-side hitter
Kaylee Hewitt posted 16 and eight digs
respectively. Yutzy again led the team with
four blocks.
"I am really proud of this team and the way
that they came together in this match,” said
Swanson. "It would have been really easy to
just pack things in and get ready to return
home. They showed a lot of pride in
themselves and respect for their teammates
as they came together and finished this
great season with one more special win.”
The victory gave the Lady Cougars their most
wins since posting 44 victories during the
1999 season and also tied the school record
for the second fewest losses with only the
1999 and 2007 teams doing better with just
five losses each.
