KISSIMMEE, Fla. (12-2-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team defeated No. 10 seed Southeastern (Fla.) University in four sets and then fell in five sets to No. 6 seed Trinity Christian (Ill.) University in the first day of pool play at the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament at the Kissimmee Civic Center on Thursday.

The Lady Cougars (42-5), who are seeded second in the 10-team event, survived a close match with Southeastern (24-15) as MVNU won by the scores of 28-26, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18. Senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht led the Lady Cougars with 23 kills, two aces, and three blocks, while freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw (left) pounded a career-high 20 kills. Sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 54 assists to go with 15 digs, and senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy contributed 15 kills and a team-high nine digs. Senior libero Caitlin Myles posted 27 digs, while sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt registered 17 digs and four blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Haley Nofziger also compiled three blocks.

"We got off to a slow start in this match,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "At the same time, (Southeastern) played really well. We were able to do just enough to come away with a victory.”

Against Trinity Christian (29-9), the Lady Cougars fell for only the second time in nine five-set matches on the season as the Trolls prevailed 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11. Albrecht again led the way for MVNU with 16 kills and nine blocks, while Votaw pounded 12 kills and served up three aces. Percival handed out 39 assists to go with 17 digs and four blocks, and Myles posted 23 digs and two aces. Hewitt also reached double figures with 17 digs, while Yutzy had four blocks.

"We had an opportunity to put this match away after going up 2-1 in sets, but (Trinity Christian) played well and kept coming back,” said Swanson. "I felt like we battled down to the very last point and didn't give in. Now, we have to bounce back and start over again tomorrow as we try to advance to the semifinals.”

In other action in the Lady Cougars' pool, No. 3 seed Campbellsville (Ky.) University swept its two matches to take the lead in the pool with a 2-0 mark. No. 7 seed King (Tenn.) College, Trinity Christian, and MVNU each went 1-1, while Southeastern was 0-2. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The Lady Cougars will close out pool play on Friday with a 10 a.m. match against King and a 4 p.m. contest against Campbellsville.

In the other pool, No. 1 seed Indiana Wesleyan University and No. 4 seed Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) University each went 2-0, while No. 8 seed Trinity International (Ill.) University was 1-1. No. 5 seed Colorado Christian University and No. 9 seed Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University both went 0-2.
