MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (11-13-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team came up one win short of earning a trip to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round as the Lady Cougars fell in straight sets to Malone University in the American Mideast Conference Tournament championship match on Saturday evening in the Physical Education Center.

The top-seeded Lady Cougars (41-4) got the day under way with a semifinal match against No. 5 seed Cedarville University. MVNU prevailed in four sets winning by the scores of 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20. Senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht led the Lady Cougars with 15 kills, 12 digs, and six blocks, while sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 39 assists to go with four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw and sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt added eight kills apiece, and senior libero Caitlin Myles posted 21 digs.

The second semifinal saw No. 3 seed Malone upset No. 2 seed Walsh University in straight sets by the scores of 29-27, 25-21, 35-33 to set up a championship match between MVNU and Malone.

The Lady Pioneers (31-7) kept their momentum going in the championship match as Malone swept the Lady Cougars 25-14, 27-25, 25-16 to avenge two five-set losses during the regular season. Albrecht again paced MVNU with nine kills, 13 digs, and thre blocks, while Votaw pounded seven kills. Percival handed out 23 more assists, and Myles and Hewitt posted 27 and 10 digs respectively.

"We got beat by a hot team that played well in both of their matches today,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We were just not consistent enough to beat them today. (Malone) played great defense in the back row and just would not let the ball hit the floor on their side. I'm proud of the way that we hung in there and did not give up, though.”

The Lady Cougars will now await word as to the seeding of the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. Details will be released once they become available.
