PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (10-30-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team split a non-conference tri-match at Shawnee State University on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Cougars rallied to defeated the University of Rio Grande in four sets and then fell in four sets to the host Lady Bears as MVNU's winning streak was snapped at 21 straight matches.

The Lady Cougars (38-3) got off to a slow start in the first match of the day against the Red Storm (19-13) as MVNU fell 25-16, but then the Lady Cougars rebounded to sweep the next three sets 25-22, 25-21, 25-15. Senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht (left) led the way with 24 kills, while freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw pounded nine kills to go with three blocks. Sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 39 assists to go with 17 digs, and sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt and senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy finished with six kills apiece with Yutzy posting a team-best 10 blocks and Hewitt adding 12 kills. Senior libero Caitlin Myles and freshman outside hitter Courtney Briegel posted 25 and 13 digs respectively.

In a battle between two teams receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, Shawnee State (30-8) prevailed over MVNU 25-19, 25-20, 25-27, 26-24 in a hard-fought match. Albrecht again paced the Lady Cougars with 23 kills and 16 digs as she became the third player in school history to top the 2,000-kill and 2,000-dig mark in a career. Votaw and Yutzy each added 10 kills, while Percival handed out 51 assists to go with 21 digs. Myles led MVNU with 30 digs, and Briegel also chipped in with 10 digs.

"These were two very tough matches today against two good teams,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "After the loss in the first set to Rio Grande, we battled back to take the match. Shawnee State played very well in the match against us. We need to regroup, have a good practice on Monday, and get ready for two tough conference matches next week.”

The Lady Cougars, who are 8-0 in American Mideast Conference play, will host Malone University (29-5, 8-1 AMC) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in conference play. That match has been designated as Care Net Night with admission being $2 for adults and $1 for students with additional donations being accepted and going directly to Care Net.
Then, on Thursday, MVNU will close out the regular season with a 7 p.m. home match against Walsh University (21-7, 8-0 AMC). The winner of the AMC regular-season title will host the AMC Tournament on November 12-13.
