LIMA, Ohio (10-23-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to a season-high 18 straight matches with a sweep of Lourdes College and then a come-from-behind four-set win over host University of Northwestern Ohio in non-conference action on Saturday.

After a close first set, the Lady Cougars (35-2), who received votes in the latest NAIA poll, got things rolling and swept Lourdes (19-15) by the scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-15. Freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw led the way for MVNU with 14 kills and two aces, while senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht pounded 11 kills to go with two aces and three blocks. Sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 36 assists and contributed 13 digs and a career-high four blocks, and senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy tallied seven hills and seven blocks. Senior libero Caitlin Myles (left) and sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt also registered 18 and 12 digs respectively.

With the victory, the Lady Cougars moved on to face the Lady Racers of Northwestern Ohio (21-11) in the championship match of the quad. Despite falling 25-12 in the first set, MVNU battled back to take the next three sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 to take the match. Albrecht smashed 16 kills, while Votaw added 11 kills. Yutzy and sophomore outside hitter Haley Nofziger finished with seven kills each, and Myles chipped in with a team-high 15 digs. Percival also handed out 45 assists to go along with 13 digs.

"These were two more good wins against quality teams,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson, whose team has had winning streaks of 17 and 18 matches this season. "We have lost to (Northwestern Ohio) in five sets in each of the past two seasons, and I was proud of the way that our team responded after dropping the first set to them today.”

"I can't really pinpoint what our success hinges on,” said Swanson. "Jackie does a great job all the way around, and Caitlin seems to handle every ball that is blasted her way. Lauren is a very energetic setter who our team seems to feed off of. The rest of the players all perform their roles well, and all that combined may be the key to our success.”

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Tuesday when MVNU will travel to Notre Dame College for an AMC match that is slated to start at 7 p.m.
