Lady Cougars Open NCCAA East Region Play

GATES, N.Y. (10-15-2010) - The Mount Vernon
Nazarene University women's volleyball team
reached the 30-win mark for the 18th
straight season as the Lady Cougars swept a
pair of matches from Nyack (N.Y.) College
and Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College at the
National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region Tournament held at
Chili High School.
MVNU (30-2) got the evening started by
downing the Lady Warriors of Nyack (4-11) by
the scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-16. Freshman
outside hitter Kendra Votaw led the Lady
Cougars with eight kills and three blocks,
while senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy
(left) added
seven kills and a team-leading six blocks.
Senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht also
contributed seven kills and three blocks,
and sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed
out 22 assists to go with 10 digs.
MVNU closed out the night by sweeping
Roberts Wesleyan (18-10) by the scores of
25-17, 25-18, 25-19. Albrecht led the Lady
Cougars with 16 kills and three blocks,
while Yutzy pounded seven kills to go with
two blocks. Percival handed out 34 assists,
and sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee
Hewitt served up two aces to go with eight
digs. Senior libero Caitlin Myles also
posted a team-high 19 digs.
MVNU will return to action at 10 a.m. when
the Lady Cougars will put their 13-match
winning streak on the line against Malone
University (24-4), who also went 2-0 at the
tournament on Friday. Then, MVNU will close
out the tournament at noon against Geneva
(Pa.) College (21-3). The winner of the
tournament receives an automatic berth into
the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee,
Fla. on December 2-4.
