Lady Cougars Finish Third at Grace
Classic with Two Wins

WINONA LAKE, Ind. (8-21-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team capped off a successful
first weekend of action as the Lady Cougars
defeated both Huntington (Ind.) University
and Davenport (Mich.) University on Saturday
to finish third out of eight teams at the
Grace (Ind.) College Ramada Plaza Classic.
In
the first match of the day, MVNU (3-1)
closed out pool play by sweeping Huntington
25-10, 25-10, 25-14. Senior middle hitters
Jackie Albrecht and Sarah Yutzy each pounded
seven kills with Albrecht adding 11 digs and
three blocks, while sophomore setter Lauren
Percival (left) handed out 21
assists. Freshman outside hitter Courtney
Briegel and sophomore right-side hitter
Kaylee Hewitt also posted 14 and 12 digs
respectively.
With the victory, the Lady Cougars squared
off with Davenport, who had finished second
in the other pool, to determine third place
in the tournament. MVNU outlasted the Lady
Panthers (2-2) with a 25-20, 25-22, 23-25,
23-25, 15-8 victory. Albrecht, who was named
to the All-Tournament Team, led the Lady
Cougars with 19 kills and 23 digs, while
Yutzy added 14 kills, 16 digs, and five
blocks. Percival handed out 48 assists to go
with 23 digs, and freshman outside hitter
Kendra Votaw smashed 12 kills. Senior
Caitlin Myles served up two aces, while
Hewitt tallied seven kills, four blocks, and
14 digs. Briegel also posted 10 digs.
"This was a good first weekend for us,” said
MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We played against
some very good teams and won three of our
four matches including two in five sets.
Several of our younger players really
stepped up and helped us. I'm looking
forward to watching our team continue to
progress throughout the season.”
The Lady Cougars will now be off until next
weekend when they will travel to the St.
Ambrose (Iowa) University Early Bird
Tournament. On Friday, MVNU will face Iowa
Wesleyan College at 6 p.m. CST and Trinity
International (Ill.) University at 8 p.m.
CST.
