MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (10-9-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team posted sweeps against Ursuline College and Houghton (N.Y.) College in an American Mideast Conference tri-match held in the Physical Education Center on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Cougars extended their winning streak to 10 straight matches while winning 27 of their last 28 contests.

MVNU (27-2, 5-0 AMC), which received votes in the latest NAIA poll, began the day with a convincing 25-8, 25-18, 25-10 sweep of Ursuline (13-11, 2-3 AMC) as senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht led the way with 11 kills and six blocks. Senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy and freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw pounded six kills apiece, while sophomore setter Lauren Percival (left) handed out 29 assists to go with a team-high 21 digs and three blocks. Sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt (14), senior libero Caitlin Myles (13), and freshman outside hitter Courtney Briegel (10) also all reached double figures in digs.

"We came out and played well from the start in this match and took care of business,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "Every conference match is important and we did what we needed to do in order to win this one.”

After Ursuline held off Houghton 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12 in the second match of the day, the Lady Cougars took their turn against the determined Highlanders (10-11, 2-4 AMC). MVNU took the first set 25-18 and then scored the final six points off the second set for a 25-19 victory. The third set went back and forth with the Lady Cougars rallying for a 25-23 win to take the match after being down 22-19.

Albrecht again led MVNU with 18 kills and three blocks, while Yutzy added 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Haley Nofziger pounded 10 kills in 18 attempts with no errors, and Percival handed out 41 assists to go with 13 digs. Myles also recorded a team-best 22 digs.

"(Houghton) really played well, especially in the second and third sets, and made us earn all of our points,” said Swanson. "You know that when you are on or near the top of the conference standings that every team is going to play their best match against you. While you have to credit Houghton for the way that they played, it's also a testament to our players that they were able to pull out this win.”

MVNU will now be off until next Thursday when the team will travel to Point Park (Pa.) University for another AMC match that will begin at 7:30 p.m. Then, the Lady Cougars will travel to Chili, N.Y. for the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament hosted by Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College next Friday and Saturday. The winner of that five-team event will earn an automatic berth into the NCCAA National Tournament.
