MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (10-2-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team capped off a good weekend by rallying to win the title of their own Lady Cougar Invitational as the team posted two more wins on Saturday in the Physical Education Center.

In the first match of the day, MVNU squared off with Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College in a contest that also counted in the American Mideast Conference standings. After having to rally from a two-set deficit to the Lady Raiders (15-6, 1-3 AMC) earlier in the season to win in five sets, the Lady Cougars (25-2, 3-0 AMC) made quick work of them this time by posting a 25-16, 25-14, 25-13 sweep.

Senior middle hitters Jackie Albrecht (left) and Sarah Yutzy each smashed nine kills to lead MVNU with Albrecht adding 10 digs and Yutzy finishing with a team-best four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Haley Nofziger and sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt pounded seven kills apiece, while sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 31 assists to go with 20 digs. Senior libero Caitlin Myles also posted a match-high 27 digs.

"Honestly, this was the most important match of the weekend for us because it was also a conference match,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "I was very pleased with our intensity, execution, and attention to details. I thought that we played very well against a quality team.”

After Union (Tenn.) University swept Roberts Wesleyan 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 and Union (Ky.) College downed Marian (Ind.) University 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 25-13, the stage was set for the two undefeated teams to meet to decide the tournament title as MVNU and Union (Tenn.) squared off.

The Lady Cougars won the first set 25-20, but then the Lady Bulldogs (12-4) took the next two sets 26-24 and 25-18 to stand one win away from claiming the title themselves. MVNU battled back to knot the match at two sets apiece with a 25-20 win in the fourth set, and then the Lady Cougars turned an 8-7 lead in the fifth set into a 15-9 win to take the match.

Albrecht, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, finished with 21 kills, 10 digs, four aces, and three blocks, while freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw and Yutzy pounded 13 and 12 kills respectively with Yutzy also leading the team with seven blocks. Percival (right) handed out a career-high 55 assists to go with three aces, three blocks, and 18 digs. Myles posted 19 digs, and Hewitt contributed 12 digs. Percival and Myles joined Albrecht on the All-Tournament Team along with Marcela Madeira, Anna Sims, and Emmie Moroski of Union (Tenn.), Amanda Silva of Union (Ky.), Mandie Bartz of Roberts Wesleyan, and Sadie Dizney of Marian.

"This was a great match between two good teams and was a battle throughout,” said Swanson. "Our team showed a lot of character and perseverance to come back after being down two sets to one. In the fifth set, we did a nice job of running off a few points to pull away for the win. This was a good team win over a very good Union squad. Matches like this really help to make us better.”

The final match of the day also went five sets with Union (Ky.) prevailing 24-26, 25-15 25-23, 20-25, 15-8 over Roberts Wesleyan to finish third with a 2-2 mark in the tournament.

The Lady Cougars are now off until next Saturday when they will wrap up their seven-match homestand with an AMC tri-match against Ursuline College (11 a.m.) and Houghton (N.Y.) College (3 p.m.).
